Mustard oil is a vegetable oil used for cooking in North India Eastern India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan. It is therefore a culturally important oil across the sub-continent. It has a distinctive pungent smell which is very characteristic of the plant from whose seeds we process this oil.
This oil has been used in the Indian sub-continent since time immemorial. Archaeological findings have shown that mustard oil was the preferred oil in the Harappan or Indus Valley civilization. One reason why this oil has been trusted across generation is because of the host of health benefits it comes loaded with. The oil was and is even today used for nursing newborn babies and infants.
I am going to list below some of the reasons why our ancestors were so enamored by the qualities of this oil and why we continue to trust their judgment regarding the same:
- It is a good source of monosaturated fatty acids.
- Being a rich source of monosaturated fatty acid, it lowers the level of harmful cholesterol in the body, thereby keeping a check on blood fat levels and helping the heart stay fit.
- during monsoon and winter season, mustard oil can be used to treat cracked heels and brittle nails.
- Since mustard oil is known to possess anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties, its usage, whether internal or external is said to help in fighting against infections, including digestive tract ones.
It is good for your skin and hair. It is therefore a good idea to include this oil in your beauty regimen.
